Organic Black Sage Smoke Cleansing Bundle
Deep, earthy, and traditionally associated with cleansing, protection, grounding, and intuitive work, Black Sage is a beautiful ritual tool for moments when you want to intentionally clear your space, strengthen your energetic boundaries, and shift heavier energy.
True Black Sage (Salvia mellifera) is a dark, aromatic sage native to Southern California and Baja California. Black Sage is often associated with deep energetic protection, grounding, dreamwork, divination, and intuitive exploration.
One important distinction: Black Sage is sometimes marketed interchangeably with Mugwort, but they are not the same plant. Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris and related Artemisia species) has its own long history of association with dreams and divination. Unless a particular bundle is botanically identified as Mugwort, I would not label Black Sage as Mugwort.
Use Black Sage before meditation or readings, after intense emotional or energetic work, when clearing your home or ritual space, or anytime you want to create an environment that feels protected, grounded, and intentionally clear.
Energetically, Black Sage is often worked with for:
✨ Protection + shielding — creating stronger energetic boundaries around yourself or your space
✨ Deep cleansing — clearing stagnant, heavy, or unwanted energy
✨ Grounding — helping bring your awareness back into the body after emotional, intuitive, or energetic work
✨ Intuition + inner knowing — creating intentional space for listening inward and connecting with your intuitive awareness
✨ Dreamwork + Astral Travel — often incorporated into practices surrounding dreams, meditation, and inner exploration through dream space and astral realms
✨ Divination + ritual — preparing yourself and your environment before readings, energy work, meditation, or ceremony
✨ Energetic boundaries — supporting the intention of discerning what belongs within your energetic space—and what does not
Black Sage vs. White Sage
While they're both called “sage,” Black Sage and White Sage are different plants with different histories and associations.
Black Sage (Salvia mellifera) is traditionally associated in with protection, grounding, deeper clearing, intuition, and dreamwork.
White Sage (Salvia apiana) is a different species with profound cultural and ceremonial importance to a number of Indigenous peoples of Southern California and the broader region.
You may sometimes hear that White Sage itself is a “closed practice.” Specific Indigenous ceremonies, traditions, prayers, and methods of using White Sage may be culturally specific or closed to outsiders. However, it is the land, the plants and the method of harvest that imbue the plant with such sacred energy. Much of the white sage available on the market is poached from sacred land and sold as 'foraged', stripping away the deep and intentional methods used in cultivation by indigenous tribes and negating the spiritual benefits. If you choose to use White Sage, ensure you are purchasing from a tribal supplier that is benefiting from the sale.
The widespread commercial use of the word “smudging” can also blur the distinction between general smoke cleansing and specific Indigenous ceremonial practices.
That's one reason we use the term smoke cleansing here. It allows you to create your own intentional practice without claiming or attempting to replicate a ceremony belonging to another cultural tradition.

Rest the bundle in a fire-safe vessel between uses.
